Japanese Device Art program in Budapest

What is Device Art?  It is a Japanese project that explores new ways of bridging art, design, technology, science and entertainment. Partly sculpture, partly gadgets, partly toys, Device Art, allows artists to develop objects that are precisely crafted, mass produced, and guided more by artistic concepts than a corporate brand or marketing position. Most importantly Device Art physically engages and creates a new relationship with its audience. ARS Electronica in 2009 features Device Art – confirming the importance and global upsurge of Device Art events including the Device Art celebration in, Budapest on September 10, 2009. According to Machiko Kusahara, who originally coined the term “Device Art”: “Works by the team members vary from Maywa Denki's funny gadgets to Hiroo Iwata's Robot Tile (currently shown at the Milano Salone 2009) and Kazuhiko Hachiya's functioning "personal" jet glider inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's animation film. In theorizing the nature of Device Art elements of Japanese culture, such as the importance of "tools", the appreciation of playfulness, the continuity between art and entertainment, and the importance of popular culture become key issues.”Following a morning workshop at the an international round table discussion is planned on.

In the early evening Machiko Kusahara’s keynote lecture will introduce the concept of Device Art and discuss questions it raises, illustrated by a wide selection of examples by Japanese artists and designers.
